About the Department

Mascalls is a Specialist Visual Arts College, and the Art and Design Department plays a central part in this. The department moved into a new, purpose-built suite of studios in 2006. Students produce a wide range of work in a variety of media.

The school employs a full-time Artist in Residence each year, and the new public Art Gallery, which also opened in 2006, provides a valuable resource in addition to the numerous local, national and international trips organised each year.

All students study Art and Design at KS3, for approximately two-and-a-quarter hours per week. Students typically experience painting, drawing and other graphic materials, textiles, digital imaging, and three-dimensional media including ceramics, wire, and construction.

Gifted and Talented students take GCSE Art and Design (Unendorsed) at the end of Year 9. There is a popular Art Club for all keen students.

Key Stage 3

See the downloads section below for details of work for Years 7, 8 and 9.

Key Stage 4

At KS4, students can choose one or more of the following GCSEs: Fine Art, Photography, Textiles, 3-D Studies, and Graphics, and GNVQ (Intermediate) Art and Design. Gifted and Talented students receive additional teaching.

Key Stage 5

At Sixth Form level, A Level Fine Art, Photography and Textiles, and AVCE Art and Design are all popular, with some students pursuing an "all-Art" programme, and many progressing to further studies at Art College.
