About Design and Technology
Mascalls Design & Technology Department was awarded the Design Mark in July 2009, the Design Mark is a quality standards framework developed jointly by the DCSF, The Design Council and the Design & Technology Association. It is an aspirational badge awarded to primary and secondary schools that demonstrate excellence in their teaching of design. We have strived to do this in the variety and deliverance of design projects through developing creativity, independent work through project based learning and through designing with wayfinding and inclusivity in mind. As one of only eight secondary schools in the country to hold this award we are extremely proud of our and our pupils' achievements!
Key Stage 3
At KS3, students spend the time developing their designing and making skills to produce a product based in the study areas of Graphic Design, Resistant Materials, Food and CAD/CAM. Pupils are taught not only to design for themselves, but also for clients and the mass market.
Key Stage 4
At KS4, students are offered a choice between 3 study areas, Graphic Products, Resistant Materials and Catering at GCSE. The department follows the WJEC (Welsh Examination Board) and course comprises of 40% examination and 60% coursework, the coursework now follows the new Controlled Assessment Tasks as with all examboards.
Key Stage 5
At KS5, AS and A2 students can take a one or two year Edexcel course in Product Design with Resistant Materials. The course is aimed at students wishing to continue their design education at university level. As well as following the design process to produce a unique, inventive and inspiring products, students gain experience of Design in Practice and Design for the Future, developing knowledge of materials and processes, new technologies and design in society. Pupils in KS5 Product Design have the opportunity to go on a European Design residential trip to Barcelona and Florence to study architecture, car design and product design.
