About Photography

Photography at Mascalls is an exciting and ever developing department where we use a range of techniques, both old and new. Students are encouraged to learn the skills of using SLR cameras and the darkroom and to later incorporate these skills into their digital work using Adobe Photoshop elements.

A variety of starting points have been used for projects, including portraiture, still life, structure and urban/rural environment. Students are encouraged to look at contemporary and traditional photographers within their own work and understand the meaning of photographs, beyond the aesthetic beauty. We encourage students to visit photography galleries when possible and trips are organised within the year. We are fortunate to live near London with all the galleries available there, but hope to visit places further a field as well.
