About Physical Education
The Physical education curriculum offers a comprehensive range of experiences to meet the needs of individual students. We encourage all students to develop and improve their skill level irrespective of their abilities and to establish a positive self-esteem towards themselves as performer, choreographer, coach and official.
Key Stage 3 Compulsory Programme
The KS3 programme consists of: Games, Gymnastics and Athletics. Classes are organised into single gender with increasingly more groups set according to ability. All students involved in KS3 have entitlement to 120 minutes of PE each week
Key Stage 4 Compulsory Programme
At present students follow a 2-year compulsory course that emphasises individual activities, net and racket games and invasion games. Throughout each course students will be taught and encouraged to improve their existing skills and continue to develop. All students involved in KS4 have entitlement to 120 minutes of PE each week
Key Stage 5 Programme
Sixth Form students are entitled to a 60-minute lesson each week (courses are very and students are able to opt into each course for a period of one semester. Activities offered enable students to experience an activity taught by external agencies.
GCSE PE
The two-year course is based on the AQA syllabus. This enables students to develop their physical abilities by acquiring technical expertise and skills in a variety of sports, thus developing a theoretical and practical knowledge in an understanding of physical activities. The course is 40% theory and 60% practical, part of the 60% invloves theoretical study into coaching and analysing sport.
AS / A2 Physical Education Examination
The course is based on the Oxford and Cambridge Syllabus, which has been designed to provide progression from GCSE and to provide a sound foundation for study in higher education. A level PE is 70% theory based and 30% practical. Students follow two chosen sports for assessment.
Sports Leadership
The sports leader (L1 Award) is available to students in KS4, It is a valued and nationally recognised award in initial coaching and leadership. Leaders assist with sporting events and are involved in Primary School Sports Coaching. Successful completion of the SL1 Award can lead to the SL2 Award in KS5
Facilities
The school has a range of grass and hard court areas. It has a recently refurbished Sports Hall and a new Multi-Purpose Hall, A new 3g floodlit artifificial turf pith is used heavily by both the school and community throughout the week.
Sports Partnership
The school is part of the Tonbridge and West Kent School Sports Partnership and is fully involved in all events. Local league school matches are a regular feature in a range of sports, including Football, Rugby, Netball, Badminton, Basketball, Rounders and Cricket. A range of extra-curricular clubs takes place during lunchtime and after school. Cometition agaist local schools start in yesr 7 and continues into year 12/13.
